You Think This Girl Likes Surya Bonaly?

I was clicking around YouTube watching videos of some of the skaters on the 2010 senior Grand Prix circuit that I'm not completely familar with, and I found a performance from French lady Mae Bernice Meite. Besides the obvious comparison of ethnicity to Surya Bonaly, she's channeling Surya in her early senior days almost completely-- with the pony tail, costume style, the way she holds herself and her arms, and the way she goes into and lands her jumps. It's seriously like watching Bonaly in 1990 or 1991 again! Can we expect future stomping off the podium and backflips during the middle of her routines when things don't go her way? :-) Just kidding, I really did like Surya. Meite is scheduled to compete at Skate America, even though her World Ranking is currently 68th (lowest out of any of the initial ladies invites, I'm pretty sure). She also has a chance to skate at her home event, Trophee Eric Bompard, as two of the three host selections have yet to be named.

Here's her long program from the 2009 Junior Grand Prix Budapest

And for comparison, Surya Bonaly's long program from the 1990 European Championships. She attempted two quads in this program, and yes she uses "The Feeling Begins" towards the end that Baiul, Kwan, and many others would use in later years!

hopefully this gal doesn't take her admiration too far. she has potential for a much longer line (ie: taller and long limbs), and already moves more lyrically and freely than bonaly.

If only she had looped her ponytail around her costume. I did see a lot of similarity in the telegraphing and arm positions before jumps but agree that Mae Bernice has a nicer line. That could be COP training though. I miss Surya, she always was exciting to watch, you never knew what you were going to get. And landing a back flip on one foot was just awesome.

Yes, Maé-Bérénice Méité is actually quite promising, she has already won two silver medals at the French Senior Nationals last two years, she is 15 years. This free program in Budapest is far from his best. Here is the French Nationals in last december: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIUc99G1kDw

The comparison with Surya Bonaly has already been made in France, here is an interview in french which we see Maé-Bérénice Méité with Surya Bonaly in last october: http://www.passion-patinage.com/spip.php?article528
